Mule Sonnet No. 9

what a handmirror does

to his reflection what sound

does to a swan what

stars do to the gravel what

pressure does to birth

-right what bill collectors

do to the quiet what his hand

by silken moonlight does

to my understanding of time

what therefore does to how

long ago what the field the grass

the wind the bird-riddled barn what

the crickets heard even over the motor

running could tell us about the temperature
