Please pardon the recent history
of our disease, which includes
but is not limited to charm schools,
tanning salons, hamsters in wire cages,
men on the moon, auto-updates,
indicator lights, boner pills, and guns.
The results can be summarized as follows:
missing bodies were not found, oceans
disappeared into the sky, email did not
improve anything, birds became spirits,
horses survived in pictures until the pictures
went up in flames, white flags fluttered
above the cities and small towns,
news travelled underground,
Jesus remained in the tomb,
and the book was closed.
What then?
We gathered at the tumbled wall
between all and thin air,
where we wept
and sometimes held each other’s hands.
